...are found since the fugitives started to arrive from the mainland.
A tale tells that the church was built because the bishop of Oderzo was told by the 12 Apostles (on a dream) to build it where he saw 12 gru all together.
During the years the church was object of a lot of reconstruction and restorations, starting from ‘400 during which Codussi added some other parts of the building like a colonnade, the Corner family Chapel and the sacristy; then in 1575 Alessandro Vittoria started big renovations, saving just the main wall and the Corner chapel.
The only nave inside the building is surrounded by the Corner Chapel, in which some of the most important members of the Corner family were buried like Caterina Corsaro, Queen of Cyprus (nowadays her body rests in San Salvador).
Finally we can not forget about some paintings of Tiepolo (Communion of Saint Lucia), Paolo Veronese (The blessing fall) and Fabio Canal (Communion of the Apostoles) who decorated the roof.
